What is Materials Science and Engineering?

As an interdisciplinary department, Materials Science and Engineering includes the subjects of many professional fields. The program includes a field of study focused on high and open technology products with strong ties to the industry. The program, which stands out with its practical areas rather than theory, is one of the rare departments that graduates its students with practical skills. Studies in Materials Science and Engineering have applications that provide opportunities for international careers, especially in developed countries.

Since the properties of materials and their designs are limited, materials gain importance in different dimensions for all branches of application. Developments in the field of material technologies bring along new design criteria and allow new products to emerge. At this point, the importance of Materials Science and Engineering emerges. Materials Science and Engineering is an engineering branch based on purpose-oriented material production and characterization by considering the design - performance - current technology - price relations.

Materials Science examines the microstructure and property relations of materials, improves their superiority by changing the internal structures of materials, and reveals new materials. Without new materials and their efficient production, modern devices, machines, computers, automobiles, aircraft, communications equipment and structural products cannot exist. Especially in the last 20 years, material technologies have never developed so rapidly throughout its history. For this reason, materials science in developed countries has become an important discipline in the competitive global economy and is considered one of the technical disciplines with the most exciting career opportunities. Materials science is integrated in many industrial applications. From materials that have become a natural part of daily life to semiconductor chips,

Materials Science and Engineering generally focuses on the following subjects;

Metallurgy: It is a branch of Materials Science and Engineering that studies the production, physical and chemical behavior of metals.

Crystallography: It is the group of Materials Science that provides the discovery of the structure of semiconductors, superconductors and even DNA.

Composite Materials: It is a sub-branch that includes steel reinforced concrete, space shuttle thermal insulation tiles, gas turbine components and light carbon fiber reinforcements and many other important materials.

Advanced Ceramics: Electronic materials are the group that includes many materials, including shockproof parts on the smartphone screen. It is an important technology for many applications in the aerospace, defense, power generation and industrial process industries.

Biomaterials: Contains materials that mimic nature. ‎Metals, ceramics, plastic, glass, and even living cells and tissues can be used to create biomaterials.

Nanomaterials: It is the branch where materials with the size of one millionth of a millimeter are studied. It is a group that provides use in designing pharmaceuticals that can target certain organs or cells in the body, such as cancer cells, and increase the effectiveness of treatment, making materials stronger and lighter, and in many other applications.
